Goal of Fishless Cycling

Establish nitrifying bacteria that convert ammonia to nitrite to nitrate before adding fish. Pure ammonia or ammonium chloride feeds bacteria without live victims.

Cycle typically takes 2–6 weeks depending on seeding, temperature, and pH.

Dosing Ammonia

Add pure ammonia (no surfactants — shake bottle, no suds) to 2–4 ppm. Test daily. When nitrite appears, reduce dose slightly to avoid stalling.

Alternative: pinch of fish food decaying produces ammonia slower but less precise.

Reading Tests

Phase 1: ammonia rises, nitrite zero. Phase 2: nitrite spikes, ammonia falls. Phase 3: both ammonia and nitrite hit zero within 24 hours of dosing — cycle complete.

Nitrate accumulation confirms progress — do large water change before stocking to lower nitrate.

Seeding Speeds Everything

Borrow filter media, substrate squeeze, or bottled bacteria from established tanks. Never seed from medicated or diseased systems.

Keep temperature 77–86°F during cycle — bacteria slow in cold tanks.

Stocking After Cycle

Add fish gradually over weeks — full bioload instantly overwhelms young bacterial colonies. Feed lightly first month.

Test ammonia and nitrite weekly after stocking — mini-cycles happen if too many fish too fast.
