Quarantine Protocol for New Livestock

Why Quarantine Matters

Retail systems mix shipments from worldwide farms — ich, velvet, and bacterial infections ride in on asymptomatic carriers. Display tanks cannot be drained and sterilized without massive cost.

Two to four weeks observation catches most common pathogens before they reach main tanks.

Basic QT Setup

Bare-bottom 10–20 gallon with sponge filter seeded from main tank, heater, and lid. No substrate simplifies cleaning and medication.

Dedicated nets, siphon, and optional UV — never share equipment unwashed between QT and display.

Observation Checklist

Daily: appetite, breathing rate, flashing, fin condition, spots, and feces. Photograph both sides under good light.

Treat at first sign in isolation rather than waiting for display outbreak.

Prophylactic vs Reactive

Some keepers run preventive deworming or ich protocols on all imports — research species sensitivity first. Invertebrates and scaleless fish need gentler approaches.

Corals and plants: dip per reputable recipes, then hold in separate system weeks before display — pests hide in plugs.

Release Criteria

Minimum two weeks symptom-free at display temperature after any treatment course completes. Acclimate QT fish to display water slowly.

If QT fish dies mysteriously, extend hold time on tank mates and test display parameters before adding survivors.
